Soft Washing vs Pressure Washing — What the Difference Actually Is
Pressure washing removes what is sitting on a surface using force. Soft washing kills what is growing on a surface using a cleaning solution at roughly garden-hose pressure. Use pressure on concrete and hard flatwork. Use a soft wash on roofs, siding, stucco and painted wood — the surfaces high pressure damages.

Why force does not fix algae
Most of what makes a St. Louis house look dirty is not dirt. It is living: Gloeocapsa magma algae on the roof, mildew in the siding texture, lichen rooted into shingle, moss in the shaded low spots.
Blast that with 3,000 PSI and the surface looks clean the same afternoon. But the organism lives down in the pores and the shingle mat, and what is left behind starts regrowing immediately. That is why people say the results "never last" — the method never addressed the cause.
A soft wash reverses the order. The solution does the killing, dwells long enough to work, and then a low-pressure rinse carries the dead material off. The surface keeps improving for days afterward as rain finishes the job.
Why high pressure damages the surfaces people use it on
- Asphalt shingles — pressure strips the ceramic granules protecting the asphalt from UV, and can force water under the courses. It may void the shingle warranty.
- Stucco and EIFS — porous, relatively soft, and permanently pitted by pressure. EIFS in particular is a foam system under a thin finish coat.
- Vinyl siding — pressure drives water behind the panels and into the wall cavity.
- Brick and mortar — pressure erodes mortar joints, especially on older homes.
- Painted wood — pressure strips paint and raises the grain.
- Windows — pressure breaks double-glazing seals and pushes water past weatherstripping.
So when is pressure the right answer?
When the surface is hard, flat and not part of the building envelope. Concrete driveways, sidewalks, patios, pavers, pool decks and commercial flatwork all clean well under pressure — ideally with a surface cleaner rather than a hand wand, so the finish is even instead of striped.

Can I use my pressure washer as a soft wash system?
Not really. A downstream injector on a consumer pressure washer dilutes solution at a fixed, weak ratio and still delivers it with more pressure than a roof should see.
Proper soft wash equipment applies solution at a controlled concentration with very little pressure, which is the whole point. The bigger issue is that the chemistry is the dangerous part — to plants, to finishes and to you.
Is soft washing safe for shingles?
Yes, when done correctly — there is no mechanical force against the shingle at all.
